Types of Diabetics
Prediabetes:
Prediabetes serves as a warning sign before the onset of full-fledged diabetes. Individuals with prediabetes have blood sugar levels higher than normal but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes and increased physical activity, can often reverse prediabetes and prevent the progression to diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes, often diagnosed in childhood or adolescence but can occur at any age, is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, individuals with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy to regulate their blood sugar levels.
Type 2 Diabetes:
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, typically developing in adults. In type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history, and certain ethnicities.
Gestational Diabetes:
Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased demands. While gestational diabetes typically resolves after childbirth, it increases the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby, including preeclampsia, macrosomia (large birth weight), and type 2 diabetes later in life for both mother and child.
